Months of talks led by the conservative Austrian People’s Party ended without a coalition and the president, a leftist former Greens leader, has been left with no choice but to look even further to the right.
The Freedom Party (FPÖ) is anti-immigration and pro-Russian.
Its leader, Herbert Kickley, is expected to open talks with the conservatives and emerge as chancellor.
Will he succeed?
And if he does so, what will the future hold for Austria’s ailing economy and its significant immigrant population?
