Local officials say four people have been killed in an overnight Russian airstrike on Kiev.

The city’s mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, said an air defense operation was underway around the Ukrainian capital.

This is the second deadly attack on Kyiv this month. Following a deadly attack on the city on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, in the southern city of Zaporizhia, local officials say six people were wounded in a Russian attack on Saturday. The condition of a woman is said to be critical.

The attacks are the latest in a war that began after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

they follow many Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory earlier in the week.

Ammunition depots and chemical plants were targeted in several regions of Russia on Tuesday, some of which were hundreds of kilometers from the border, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Sources in Ukraine’s SBU intelligence agency told the BBC that Tuesday’s attack was a “painful blow” to Russia’s ability to wage war.

At the time, Russia said it had shot down US-supplied long-range Atakam missiles as well as UK-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and vowed to respond to the attack.
