TV drama’s Norfolk ‘Alps’ mocked on social media
A Netflix series depicting Norfolk’s lesser-known snow-capped mountains has sparked mockery on social media.
The famous flat county is featured in a new six-part drama about the life of Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, who honed his craft in Norfolk in the early 1980s.
When spectators saw a series of rugged peaks beyond Snetterton they doubled up, the race circuit derided the “unusually hilly” view.
A Facebook post attracting hundreds of comments said: “We think this is pretty accurate. Old Buckenham’s monumental, Himalaya-rivaling peaks are often visible on a clear day.”
‘Skiing holidays fixed’
The post has been shared more than 3,000 times.
“I live about a mile away and suffer from altitude sickness regularly,” said one.
“Worked on the Snetterton circuit and lived right over that hill,” added another.
“Bike ride to hell!”
One man joked, “No wonder it took so long to duel the A11.”
Others simply saw an opportunity.
“Then it’s my next skiing holiday.
“The Norfolk Alps this is – no airport queues and less than a two-hour drive.”
Senna focuses on the Brazilian racing driver’s early career from his death at the age of 34 at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
In the early 1980s, Senna lived in a bungalow in Eton on the edge of Norwich While driving for Ralph Firman’s Van Diemen Company based at Snetterton, before moving to Team Lotus.
It is not known where the Snetterton scenes were filmed, but a track in Buenos Aires, Argentina was used for some racing shots.
Similarly, Norfolk track doubles up for some of the world’s most historic tracks In Ron Howard’s 2013 film Rush.
Snetterton confirmed that he had no involvement in the filming of Senna.
Netflix has been contacted for comment.
