An elderly woman has been taken to hospital after a house fire in Antrim early on Tuesday.

Police received reports at around 03:20 GMT that a property in Rathglin had been set on fire.

A woman in her 70s was inside the property at the time of the incident. After the incident, he was taken to the hospital for treatment due to burns on his hands and the smoke.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said: “There has been significant damage to property and at this stage, the incident is being treated as arson with intent.”

A woman, aged in her 40s, was treated for smoke inhalation and hand injuries as he attempted to free her from the property.

A man in his 40s was also treated for smoke inhalation when he attempted to render aid.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service brought the fire under control.
