An Indian man was shot dead illegally in Israel, saying he was a victim of a job scam.
Thomas Gabriel Perera was killed by Jordan’s security forces from the border on 10 February with Israel.
He was lured to Jordan by the promise of an attractive job, and when it did not happen, he tried to enter Israel because he was told that he could get work there, his family told the BBC.
Reports of Indians falling into other countries illegally in search of work for employment scams and work have become rapid.
47 -year -old Perera was with his brother -in -law Edison Charles, who was injured in the incident. Mr. Charles was treated at the hospital and spent a fortnight in jail before returning to India.
Both people were from the southern Indian state of Kerala where they worked as auto-rickshaw drivers.
An agent promised him that he could get a blue-collar jobs in Jordan in earning Rs 350,000 ($ 4,000; £ 3,110) in a month.
Mr. Charles told the BBC that he paid Rs 210,000 to an agent before leaving India, and paid an additional $ 600 after reaching Jordan on a tourist visa.
But when both the people arrived in the city of Amman, the capital of Jordan in early February, they were told by the agent that no job was available.
The agent then suggested that he should try to cross illegally in Israel, claiming that there were a lot of opportunities.
On 10 February, Mr. Charles and Perera joined a group, which along with Israel went to Jordan border for hours.
“We were taken into a car. It was a long distance. We came in the car at 2 pm and reached the place around midnight. Then we were built to walk several kilometers with a beach. It was walking in the dark that we were shot,” said Mr. Charles.
The BBC has seen a letter sent to Perera’s family by the Indian Embassy in Jordan. It said that “security forces tried to stop them, but they did not hear the warning, the guard set them on fire”.
“A bullet hit Mr. Thomas (Perera) in his head and he died on the spot.”
Mr. Charles, however, disputed the account and said “there was no such warning (from the guard). He just shot.”
He said, “I was walking slowly behind others in the dark … When the bullet hit me and I lost consciousness. I had no clue what happened to Thomas,” he said.
The BBC has asked India’s Foreign Ministry and Jordan officials to comment on the charge of Mr. Charles.
Mr. Charles said he was later rushed to a hospital for treatment and then moved between several Jordan government offices before he was shifted to jail, where he was kept for 18 days.
While in jail, he managed to contact his wife and told him what happened, and his wife approached the Indian embassy officials.
Mr. Charles was sent to India on 28 February.
Perera’s body is still in Jordan. In response to the BBC questions, India’s Foreign Ministry said that they were working to bring the body back to India as soon as possible.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, “I have been told that it will take a day or two to complete the documentation process and other things.”
