The death toll in Israel’s war on Gaza exceeds 45,000. Israel-Palestine conflict news
As the war approaches its 15th month, Palestinians are facing ‘unbearable’ losses, with 52 dead taken to hospitals in the past day alone.
More than 45,000 people have now been killed in Israel’s war on Gaza, the besieged and battered Palestinian territory’s health ministry has confirmed.
Authorities on Monday announced a revised death toll, including 17,000 children, marking another grim milestone in the 14-month war.
This does not include the 11,000 missing Palestinians who are believed to be buried under the debris.
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary said, “The loss of life and property in Gaza is unbearable for Palestinians who have been living in this war for more than 14 months.”
“Every aspect of life, including schools, shelters and hospitals, has been targeted by Israeli forces,” said Khoudri, reporting from Deir al-Balah in the center of the strip.
The situation in the north of Gaza, which is under an even tighter siege, was particularly distressing, Khoudary said.
“There is continued shelling and airstrikes – quadcopters are chasing Palestinians on the streets and killing them,” he said. He said rescue workers were unable to reach people.
“We see a lot of Palestinians on the ground and no one is able to reach them,” he said, pointing to the massacre at the Khalil Oweida school in Beit Hanoun on Sunday.
Monday morning was also “bloody”, said Al Jazeera’s Tariq Abu Azzoum, reporting from the center of the Strip amid the sound of explosions, as Israeli forces attacked civilians in the nearby Nussirat refugee camp.
Palestinian health officials said 52 dead people had arrived at hospitals in the bombed-out Strip in the past 24 hours.
Doctors say 10 of the visitors – including two parents and their two children – were killed in an overnight Israeli attack on a house in the Shujaiya neighborhood east of Gaza City.
At least 20 displaced Palestinians were killed in a separate attack on the Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz school in the southern city of Khan Younis on Sunday.
The Israeli military claimed that it “launched a precision strike” on Hamas members operating inside the school compound, but did not provide evidence.
On Monday, mourners gathered for the funeral of Al Jazeera TV journalist Ahmed al-Louah, who was killed along with five Palestinian civil defense workers in an attack on the Nussirat refugee camp the previous day.
The overall death toll now amounts to about 2 percent of Gaza’s pre-war population of about 2.3 million.
