Abdel Fatah al-Burhan visited the major military site as the WHO chief condemned a deadly attack on the hospital in Darfur area.

Sudan’s Army Chief Abdel Fatah al-Burhan has visited the army headquarters in the capital Khartum in his first presence as government forces have claimed to have broken a one-month siege by the paramilitary rapid support forces (RSF).

On Sunday, along with top military officials, Al-Burhan praised the “flexibility and sacrifice” of the soldiers who protected the General Command of the Army for 20 months, “eradicate” the RSF and “in every corner of Sudan” Vowed to chase his fighters.

He also appreciated the ongoing campaigns by the Sudani Armed Forces (SAF) at other places in the country, including Omdurman, Bahri and Al-Fashar, where there have been fierce clashes in recent times.

“Our forces are in their best positions,” said Al-Burhan, at the re-occupied headquarters last week after the RSF was surrounded after the war began in April 2023.

The SAF announced on Friday that it successfully lifted the RSF blockade at Khartum and withdrew control over parts of the city, indicating a possible turn in a two -year war. The RSF dismissed the army claims as “publicity” for the purpose of boosting morale.

Earlier this month, the army again captured the Gizira state capital Vad Madani, which was occupied by RSF for more than a year. There are reports that military forces have committed alleged ethnic murders after capturing strategic city.

The RSF has been accused of various misconduct during the war – including the United States allegations that it has massacred.

While reporting from Khartum, Al Jazira’s Hiba Morgan said that Al-Burhan’s comments on Sunday indicated that the General was not interested in diplomacy at this time.

He said, “Al-Burhan has made it clear that he will not interact with the RSF, there will be no reconciliation and the fight will continue till the last rebel is killed.”

“This is not the first time we are hearing these words from the army chief, but the regional partners and the international community have also tried to find a diplomatic solution. It seems that General Al-Burhan is currently opting for military victory, especially since the army has been able to gain control over the area over the last few weeks.

Attack on hospital filled with patients

The incident has come to light when the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) condemned the attack in which dozens of people were killed in a hospital in Al-Fashar in Darfur region.

Saudi Hospital, the main hospital in the area surrounded in the attack on Friday night, was targeted. It could not be immediately clear who did the attack. A local official said that the RSF attacked the drone.

WHO Director General Tedros Adnom Ghebiyyas on Sunday confirmed that at least 70 people were killed and 19 others were injured.

Tedros said in a post on X, “At the time of the attack, hospital care was packed with patients receiving care.”

Saudi Arabia condemned the attack, calling it “violation of international law and international human law”.

Local groups and international rights groups have reported attacks on displacement camps and other facilities by the first RSF in which citizens were killed and injured.

According to local officials, more than 5,000 people have been killed or injured since RSF started an attempt to capture Al-Fashhar in last May.

Amgad Farid Altayeb of Fikra for Studies and Development Think Tank said, “Al-Fashar is the largest city and the largest functional airport in Darfur region.” It is the last major area of ​​the region controlled by the army.

“RSF is trying to take Al-Fasher to prepare a landscape to announce his government with its colleagues,” Altayeb told Al Jazeera.

“RSF and its colleagues want Darfur to be fully captured to establish the government, and Sudan should be abandoned with the same model as Libya.”

Eltayeb also expressed concern about a pattern of attacks by RSF since January 15, which has targeted water dams, power stations and oil refineries.
