Shelling ‘Morchery fills with bodies’ in the busy Sudani market’

Fulfying in a busy market near the capital of Sudan has filled a morgue with bodies, called medical charity doctors without borders (MSF).

MSF and Sudani officials said the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) was responsible for a Saturday attack in Omdurman city, killing more than 100 people and injured – a claim that the RSF has refused.

Sudani Doctors Union says that most of the people killed in the market were women and children.

The Army of RSF and Sudan has been locked in a civil war, in which in 22 months, thousands of people have been killed and the United Nations described as one of the world’s worst human disasters.

In the last few weeks, the army has taken its aggressive steps in Omdurman, which is located across the Nile River from the capital city, Khartum, which aims to achieve full control from RSF.

Eyewitnesses told the AFP news agency that Saturday’s artillery shelling came from Western Omdurman, where RSF is under control.

MSF general secretary Chris Lockier said Saturday’s explosion caused “fully carnez” at the nearby Al Nao Hospital, which was overwhelmed by the injured patients.

The Sudani doctors’ union appealed for a nearby medics to assist in the hospital, stating that there was a “rapid shortage of medical staff”.

It said that a shell fell “meter away” from the hospital on Saturday.

“Gole was hit in the middle of the market, hence the victims and injured are so many,” a survivor told the AFP news agency.

Both sides have been accused of targeting citizens including health workers and indiscriminate shelling of residential areas.

Recent clashes have forced emergency response rooms to close several health centers, affecting the provision of medical services to thousands of residents.
