Search continues for attacker in New York, new photos released

Police searching for the gunman who killed a health insurance chief executive in New York have released two new photos of a suspect.

UnitedHealthcare boss Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back on Wednesday while on his way to a conference in what police believe was a targeted attack.

On Saturday, city Mayor Eric Adams said the “net is tightening” around the gunman, who has so far eluded police despite an extensive search and the use of facial recognition technology.

The FBI has offered a reward of $50,000 (39,000 pounds) for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The latest photographs of the man being sought were taken from a vehicle. In one, she can be seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt and disposable face covering in the back of a taxi.

In the second, he is seen outside the car again wearing a facemask.

The new appeal came after US media reported that the suspect’s backpack recovered near the scene contained a Tommy Hilfiger jacket and paper money from the board game Monopoly.

Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, was shot as he drove to an investor conference in midtown Manhattan, where he was scheduled to speak later that day.

Police said the gunman first fled the scene on foot, then rode a bike towards Central Park.

The motive for the murder is still being investigated. Authorities have confirmed that pill shells found near the victim’s body had the words “deny”, “defend” and “depose” written on them – language that may be associated with critics of America’s private health insurance industry.

On Friday, a person familiar with the case told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that investigators believe the suspect is no longer in New York City and may have boarded a bus to downtown Atlanta in the state of Georgia.
