Scottish drug lab boss jailed after arrest in Spain
A senior member of an organized crime group that ran an amphetamine lab in Scotland has been jailed for 13 years.
Colin Wright, 38, fled to Murcia, Spain to avoid capture after his fellow gang members were caught in a National Crime Agency (NCA) operation in March 2021.
Wright, formerly of Motherwell, was the leader of the Scottish branch of the group and was actively involved in heroin and cocaine trafficking.
He is the last member of the gang to go to jail, while six others are already in jail.
Wright pleaded guilty to five drug charges at Liverpool Crown Court last month.
He set up an amphetamine lab in Motherwell in March 2020 during the first Covid lockdown. It was capable of producing 1,000 kilograms of amphetamine.
He also helped move at least 20 kilograms of cocaine and 10 kilograms of heroin between Motherwell and Merseyside.
NCA branch commander Kat McHugh said: “Wright’s case shows that criminals seeking asylum abroad are never immune from the reach of law enforcement.
“Their sentencing means we have completely dismantled this organized crime group who posed a serious threat to communities in Scotland and Merseyside, helping to fuel violence and exploitation through the drugs they trafficked. Was found.”
