Russell Martin: Southampton sack manager after Tottenham defeat
Southampton have sacked manager Russell Martin after Sunday’s 5-0 defeat by Tottenham left them nine points short of Premier League safety.
Martin, 38, guided the Saints to promotion last year in his first season in charge by beating Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley.
But the defeat against Spurs was Southampton’s 13th defeat in 16 matches this league campaign.
Their only win this season was against Everton in November, while the St Mary’s club have conceded the fewest goals in the league with 11 goals.
“At the start of the season, we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we reimagined life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world,” a statement from Southampton said. Have adjusted.”
“However, the reality of our position is clear. The Board has supported Russell and his staff and has been open and transparent regarding our expectations.”
“We are all on the same page in recognizing the urgency of the need to improve outcomes.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for the hard work and dedication they have given to the club on and off the field over the past 18 months.
“Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always have great memories of last season, especially the play-off final victory in May.”
Southampton Under-21 manager Simon Rusk will take interim charge of the senior team and his first game will be a Carabao Cup quarter-final at home to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.
Martin’s sacking comes on the same day that fellow top-flight strugglers Wolves decided to sack manager Gary O’Neill.
