Robots Might Be Able To Sense Human Feelings Just By Touching Skin Scientists Claim
Robots of the future will also be able to understand the emotions of humans. Scientists are claiming that robots will be able to detect emotions of humans just by touching their skin. This study has been published in the IEEE Access journal. According to which, researchers have conducted experiments on the conductivity properties of the skin to understand the emotions of a person, which is called skin conductance in English. Skin conductance is a measurement of how well the skin can conduct electricity. It usually changes in response to sweat secretion and neural activity, reflecting different emotional states of humans.
Traditional emotion detection techniques such as facial recognition and speech analysis often fail to accurately detect emotions. Scientists say skin conductance offers a potential solution that provides a non-invasive way to capture emotions in real time. Scientists included 33 participants for the study. Participants were shown emotion-evoking videos. During this their skin conductance was measured.
In the experiment, different patterns emerged for different emotions. Among these, feelings of fear were seen to be present for the longest period. At the same time, slow response was seen for the emotions of family bonding, mixed feelings of happiness and sadness. On the other hand, humorous videos showed fast but quickly fading reactions. This study strengthens the hope of scientists that soon such technology will be developed which will be able to accurately predict emotions including physiological signals.
