PDC World Darts Championship 2025 results: Gerwyn Price wins while crying Cameron Menzies loses

Grand Slam quarter-finalist Menzies was disappointed after a surprise defeat to the experienced Gates.

The 54-year-old never looked back after posting a 138 checkout in the opening leg against the Scot, who booked a place in the last four of the WDF World Championship in 2022.

While Gates shook her hips and received chants of ‘USA, USA’ after winning the doubles, her opponent faced jeers and looked more frustrated as the match progressed.

Menzies, whose teammate Fallon Sherrock played Ryan Meikle on Tuesday, took deep breaths and appeared to wipe away tears between throws in the latter stages.

“I was certainly aware of it (his feelings),” Gates said. “But at the same time, I want my opponent to play their best against me, to see if I can play my best against them.

“I told them to harness the energy of the crowd, keep coming and keep doing their best to raise the PDC.”

Gates will now face two-time major winner Nathan Aspinall in the second round on Wednesday.

Before Price’s headline act, another Welsh victory at two o’clock in the morning was provided by Robert Owen, who came from behind to secure a 3–1 win over Dutchman Niels Zonneveld with a 121 checkout.

Owen’s first Ally Paly win in 2023 prepares for Thursday’s second-round match against German Gabriel Clemens, a semi-finalist.

England’s Schutt, a quarter-finalist at the Players Championship, encouraged the crowd to get behind him and gave him a show with a 101.92 average and 56% checkout success.

Scutt, nicknamed ‘The Sniper’, topped the Secondary Challenge Tour Order of Merit and dominated New Zealand’s Robb, who has now lost all five of his World Championship matches.

Scutt, 28, faces Australian number one Damon Hetta in the second round on Saturday, when teenage talent Luke Littler will also play his first match of the tournament.
