Veteran Al Jazeera correspondent Shirin Abu Akleh was killed 1,000 days ago, covering an Israeli raid at the Genin refugee camp at West Bank occupied on May 11, 2022.

Shirin’s murder

Since the Battle of Israel on Gaza began on October 7, 2023, CPJ found that Israel killed 159 Palestinian journalists.
Despite the growing evidence that Abu Akley was directly targeted, Israel, the United States or international courts is a very low political will for a criminal investigation.

What did Israel say?
Israel initially tried to dismiss the blame for the incident and suggested that the Palestinian fighters killed the journalist.

Soon after Abu Akleh’s death, the then-American President Joe Biden’s administration stated that criminals should “sue the law to the extent of law”.

Several mainstream news organizations and open-source investigation teams investigated their own.
In May 2022, CNN stated that it found new evidence – two videos – suggesting that Abu Akle was shot in an attack by Israeli forces.
The Palestinian Legal Rights Group Al-Haq and Forensic Architecture, a joint investigation by the United Kingdom-based group, also specialized in open-source analysis and architectural techniques.
His conclusions were released in September 2022 and determined that Abu Akle was deliberately killed.
In addition, Al Jazeera’s front lines documentary, The Killing of Shirin Abu Akle, was released in December 2022 and the early claims of Israel suspected that he was killed by Palestinian bullets or by a crossfire.
Did ICC do anything?
In December 2022, Al Jazira Media Network filed a request for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open a case against Israel for the assassination of Abu Akleh.
Abu Akleh’s family filed a similar request in the court in September of that year, supported by Palestinian Press Syndicate.
The ICC has still not revealed whether it will open a case to do justice for Abu Akleh.
What about the United Nations?
On 16 October 2023, the International Commission of the United Nations concluded the investigation on the Palestinian region occupied that Israeli forces used “deadly force without justification” in targeting Abu Akle.
It was also said that there were appropriate basis that it was done by the Duvvan unit of Israeli security forces.
The Commission investigated its findings and open-source information on eight witness testimony, as well as by news outlets including Al Jazeera, CNN, Washington Post and New York Times.
Al Jazeera called the conclusions to be given to the ICC to help in the criminal investigation of the incident.
