Andre Onana’s howler sealed United’s home defeat as struggling Spurs suffered another defeat at Everton in Football’s Premier League.
Manchester United’s season has fallen into further turmoil after a 3-1 home defeat to Brighton in the Premier League.
United suffered a crushing defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday after goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter handed United their 10th defeat in the league.
Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot for United, but the hosts were not helped by a howler from goalkeeper Andre Onana, who collected a routine from a low cross into the box, allowing Rutter to tap in the loose ball.
It was the seventh defeat in 15 games overall under new head coach Ruben Amorim and highlighted the Portuguese manager’s huge task to revive the record 20-time English champions.
Brighton moved up to ninth place with 34 points, four points less than the top four. United are in 13th place out of 26 matches, with 22 games in hand.
Brighton have won six of their last seven league matches with United and have won in their last three visits to Old Trafford.
The teams were led off by bagpipes with former manager Alex Ferguson laying a wreath on the center circle in memory of club great Dennis Law, who died this week.

Brighton took the lead inside five minutes as Mitoma beat the offside trap on the left from Carlos Baleba’s long ball and his pass across goal provided an easy finish for the unmarked Minteh.
United were awarded a penalty midway through the first half when Brighton attempted to play the ball out of defence, but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s pass was poor and the ball fell to Joshua Zirkzee in the box.
Baleba placed his hand on the shoulder of the striker, who fell to the ground. Referee Peter Banks pointed to the spot, Fernandes had no problem slotting home to level the scores.
Brighton thought they were ahead again seven minutes into the second period when United failed to clear a low free kick in the box and Pedro finished. But a VAR investigation showed that Jan-Paul van Hecke had kicked Diogo Dalot’s leg in the melee.
However, the visitors got a second chance when Mitouma headed Minteh’s inviting cross at the back post beyond United defender Noussair Mazraoui.
Brighton then scored a third goal thanks to a terrible error from Onana to make the game safe and force United to settle for their 10th league defeat.
Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing campaign also sank to new depths with a 3-2 defeat at relegation-fighting Everton. But Nottingham Forest’s unlikely title challenge grew stronger after a 3-2 win against last-placed Southampton.
