Aisha al-Dibs, the new head of women’s affairs, told Al Jazeera that women from all provinces and ethnicities will help rebuild the war-torn country.
The newly appointed head of the Office of Women’s Affairs under the Syrian interim government says the administration will enable women to contribute to the reconstruction of a country devastated by more than a decade of conflict.
In an interview with Al Jazeera from Damascus on Sunday, Aisha al-Dibs said the government is committed to including Syrian women in social, cultural and political institutions, and recruiting qualified women into the health care and education sectors.
“It is known to all of us that the Syrian woman, historically, is a highly effective woman, capable of leading in all areas. Today, we are in the process of returning him to this leading role in building Syria, a new country, an independent country, to which we all aspire,” al-Dibs said.
She promised to encourage Syrian women from all provinces and ethnicities to participate in the upcoming national conference, at which the future of the country will be discussed.
Al-Dibs said that the Office of Women’s Affairs, with her as its head, was established in response to questions surrounding the role of Syrian women in the new government.
Syria’s new rulers came to power earlier this month after opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a lightning offensive from the northwestern province of Idlib in November, repelling government forces with little resistance. Cities were taken away one after another.
Opposition forces reached Damascus in the early hours of 8 December and announced the end of more than 50 years of the Bashar al-Assad family’s hardline rule over Syria.
Western countries are struggling with their approach to HTS, a former al-Qaeda ally. HTS has been designated a “terrorist” group by several Western governments, despite the group controlling its rhetoric in recent months.
The UN Security Council in a statement earlier this week urged the implementation of “an inclusive and Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process”, which it said must meet the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians, all of them. must protect and “enable them to determine their own future peacefully, freely and democratically”.
Help for women in jail
Following the overthrow of al-Assad, opposition fighters freed thousands of Syrians from a network of prisons run by the former regime. Thousands of people believed to be detained by the al-Assad government remain unaccounted for.
Al-Dibs also said his office would prepare a report on female detainees released from prisons and work on a comprehensive plan for their welfare. She said she would demand prosecution of prison officials accused of violating rights inside prisons.
He said prison records were tampered with due to “spontaneous and disorganized efforts” by people who had joined forces with opposition forces to open the prisons. The result was that there was no trace of many female prisoners.
Al-Dibs said, “I will launch a phone number dedicated to women in prison, whether they have been in prison for a long time or have recently been detained, so that they can be counted and worked with Could.”

Al-Dibs, whose appointment was announced on Friday, is the first woman to hold a ministry in the new Syrian administration. She is recognized for her rights activism and humanitarian work.
