Major Caribbean earthquake trigger tsunami alert

The US Geological Survey states that a powerful 7.6-delest earthquake has warned the Caribbean Sea to a tsunami for many countries.

Officials say the earthquake is about 20 miles (32.1 km) north of Honduras and 130 miles (209.2 km) in the southwest of the Cayman Islands.

Several tsunami alerts have been issued for the region including Columbia, Casta Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Cuba.

The National Meteorological Service has warned of potential threats for Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands: “Strong currents and waves are dangerous for those or very close water”.

The USGS said that large earthquakes at this location of the plate border are not unexpected.

In 2018, a 7.5-fanatism earthquake occurred nearby, causing some damage and a small tsunami, it said.

“Fortunately, the remote location of these earthquakes limits the capacity of significant damage due to shaking,” it said.
