Expectations were high and as a result the pressure was increased last year but England’s form left much to be desired.

After failing to qualify for the Olympic Games, the Lionesses failed in Euro 2025 qualification due to unconvincing performances against Sweden and France.

A period of experimentation began after Wiegmann changed formations and rotated his players, which meant that results were poor.

Midfielder Georgia Stanway admitted she had “things to work on” after the defeat to Germany in October, but was not nervous.

“Overall, I don’t think we need to be too disappointed,” he said. “We have a long process to get the euro right.

“This is a step in that direction – whether it’s good or bad. It’s a way we can learn.”

The Lionesses ended the year with seven wins from 12 matches, but improved on their goalless draw with the reigning Olympic champions, the United States.

Wiegman and his players are under pressure to perform well this year, as 2024 ends with more questions than answers.
