Issy Wong: England called fast bowler wrong, Mark Robinson says

World Cup winning coach Mark Robinson believes that England needs to learn from the poor management of young fast bowler Issi Wong.

Wong made his debut in all three formats as a 20 -year -old in 2022 and was seen as one of England’s most exciting possibilities, with his speed and aggression.

She has been out of favor after a recession since 2023 and Robinson says all her publicity and marketing did not help at such a young age.

Robinson, who won the World Cup with England in 2017, told TNT Sports, “We carry it forward without a foundation.”

“She was an ECB’s pin-up girl as a young girl, as a child, and then when things became a bit difficult, she did not have tools to survive.”

Wong has been given a development contract from ECB for 2024–25 and was recently played in the White-Ball series against Ireland last September, when most were preparing for the first XI T20 World Cup.

During the 2023 Ashes series, Wong portrayed England’s advertising campaigns prominently, but eventually did not play a single game as she struggled for continuity.

A difficult hundred competition was followed with Birmingham Phoenix, where he was dropped on his behalf due to run-up issues.

Then he surprisingly made an England appearance against Sri Lanka, and scored 24 runs from two overs with three front foot no-balls.

Wong will play in 2025 as part of the new professional domestic set-up for Warwickshire, where Robinson is in favor of men.

Robinson said, “Isi is really doing well and working hard – she is still young at the age of 22 and she is a hurry, so her time will come again.”

“This is something to learn – how to handle players when we highlight them and when to get them out, to save them.

“This is not only from sports, but also to protect them from media that sometimes want a piece of them.”
