Israeli attack on Gaza kills 11, including Hamas police chief, doctors say
At least 11 Palestinians, including the head of the area’s Hamas-run police force, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tent camp sheltering displaced families in southern Gaza, medics say.
Three children and two women were reportedly among the dead in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Yunis city.
The Hamas-run Interior Ministry condemned the “killing” of Police Director General Mahmoud Salah and his assistant Hussam Shahwan, who it said were “fulfilling their humanitarian and national duty”.
The Israeli military said it was looking into the reports.
The army has declared a sandy strip of land along the coast in al-Mawasi a “humanitarian zone” for Palestinians displaced by the war with Hamas. But he has repeatedly attacked Hamas activists, accusing them of hiding among displaced civilians.
Recent cold, wet weather has worsened conditions in the temporary camp.
In the past day, deadly Israeli airstrikes also hit Jabaliya, a suburb of Gaza City, north of Jabaliya, and Burij in central Gaza – from where the Israeli military said rockets were initially fired into southern Israel. New Year.
