The murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital where she worked in the eastern city of Kolkata shocked the entire country last August.

The 31-year-old man had gone to sleep in the seminar hall of the Government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after the night shift. Her semi-nude, seriously injured body was later found near the stage by a co-worker.

The crime sparked widespread protests and concerns over the safety of healthcare workers, especially women, in India.

According to the charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), seen by the BBC, Roy went to the hospital in an inebriated state and found the female doctor sleeping alone.

The autopsy report indicated that the woman was strangled and had injury marks that suggested she had struggled.

Roy was arrested a day after the crime and has consistently denied the allegations.

In Kolkata, doctors went on strike for weeks demanding action against the accused and officials who they said were involved in delaying or derailing the investigation.
