Guatemala agrees to increase the number of American exile flights that accept it. Migration news
In 2024, around 66,000 people were sent from the US to Guatemala. Under Trump, that number is expected to increase.
The central country of Guatemala has agreed to increase the number of exile flights from the United States after the visit of the state secretary Marco Rubio.
At a news conference on Wednesday, Guatemele President Bernardo Arewalo also announced that his country would accept the non-citizens sent from the US.
“We have agreed to increase the number of flights from our nationality as well as other nationalities to an increase in the number of flights of exiled,” Arvlo said, which appeared jointly with Rubio.
This is not the first time Guatemala has accepted exile flights from the US: it also did the same under the previous administration of the US President Joe Biden.
But Trump, the current President, has launched a huge campaign to stamped irregular migration in the US, and since assuming office on January 20, he has pressurized the countries around the region to join his efforts.
Speaking as a condition of anonymity, an official of Guatemele told Reuters of the news agency that under Biden, the Central American country received about 14 exile flights per day.
It is not clear how much can increase under Trump.
But Reuters mentioned that about 66,000 Guatemele Trump, exempted from the US in the financial year 2024, was more than one year from 2017 to 2021 during the first term of Trump.
Rubio visited Guatemala as the top diplomat of America as part of his first visit.
He is traveling to the field for support support for the anti -immigration of Trump, passing through the Panama, Al Salvador and Costa Rica before reaching Guatemala. He is ready to visit the next Dominican Republic.
But while living in Guatemala, he praised Arewalo for accepting non-citizens within the borders of Guatemala.
Before assuming the office, the Trump transition team had struggled where the non-citizens detained as part of the immigration raid were kept. Some countries like Venezuela and Cuba have refused to participate in American exile flights.
For example, in December, news reports were revealed that Trump planned to contact the Caribbean countries including Bahamas, Granada and Turks and Caicos to accept migrants from other countries.
But the leadership of the island nations refused. Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis said at the time, “Bahamas does not have resources to accommodate such a request.”
On Wednesday, Rubio indicated that the US would provide financial assistance to Guatemala to refund non-citizens in its home countries.
He praised Arewalo, saying that the deportation-land deal was “very important for us in the context of the migrant situation that is facing”.
Rubio said, “Not only their desire to accept citizens but people of other nationalities they eventually try to return to their own homes, and we have promised to support with those efforts.”
President Arewalo indicated for his share that the question of accepting migrants with criminal records was not discussed.
A day earlier, the President of Al Salvador, Naib Bukle offered to give a jail to any violent criminals who send their way – whether they are migrant or American citizens.
However, even the officials of the Trump administration have expressed doubts about the validity of that proposal.
Rubio publicly thanked the bouquet for his proposal, but accepted legal obstacles. “We have a constitution,” he said about America.
Nevertheless, the US on Tuesday began to send unspecified immigrants at its military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a site of a detention center criticized for violating the alleged human rights.
An estimated 11 million unspecified people live in the US until 2022, many play important roles in their communities.
