Google lays off Sundar Pichai announces 10 percent job cuts in Managerial roles
This layoff at Google is being done in view of the increasing competition in the field of AI. Also the aim of the company is to double the efficiency. Of the 10 percent retrenchments, some posts have been transferred to Individual Contributor roles. Whereas some roles have been eliminated by the company. Media reports said CEO Sundar Pichai indicated at a consensus meeting on Wednesday that the roles of manager, director and vice president would be cut.
Layoff in Google has been done due to Artificial Intelligence (AI) competitors such as OpenAI. OpenAI is constantly launching new products that can affect Google’s search engine business. In response to competition, Google has included generative AI features in its core business.
Google has introduced generative AI features in its products. This month the company has responded to the competition by launching Gemini 2.0. Gemini 2.0 is the company’s most advanced AI model to date. According to Pichai, this new model will usher in “a new agentic era.” In which AI models are designed to understand the world and make decisions about it.
After this release from the company, Google’s shares jumped by more than 4 percent on Wall Street. At the same time, after the release of the quantum chip a day earlier, the company’s stock had increased by 3.5 percent.
This is the fourth layoff in the company this year. In January, the company made several hundred layoffs from the global advertising team. In June also, the company had eliminated more than 100 jobs from the cloud unit.
