The police were called to Magdlen Street in Cololecster at around 04:40 GMT for a “serious” accident report.
Participated in other emergency services and the road was closed throughout the day, while the vehicle was recovered and questioned.
Temporary assistant chief constable, Stuart Hooper said: “My thoughts, and people in Essex Police are with friends and families of four people who died this morning.”
The victims died all around.
Police said their families were informed and would be supported by expert officials.
Magdlen Street has reopened but some buildings were being evaluated for structural damage.
Mr. Hooper said: “I want to thank businesses and inhabitants in the Magdlane Street sector today in a really difficult and tragic situation for their support and understanding.
“I always want to pay tribute to emergency service personnel, who have done hard work, professional and kind to ensure the dignity of those who died.
“Our inquiry to lead to the collision is going on to install it and I need anyone with information to contact us.”
