Formula 1 auction record: Sterling Moss and Juan Manual Fangio for £ 42.75 m Mercedes

A Mercedes ‘Streamliner’ by Formula 1 legend Sterling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio has sold a record at £ 42.75M (€ 51.155m) in auction.
The Silver W196 R Stromlinienwagen was operated by Argentina’s five -time F1 Champion Fangio as he won the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix.
Britain’s moss pilot the car at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza the same year, which installed the fastest lap at an average speed of 134Mph before retiring.
Silver Arrow was sold by RM Sothabi at the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and becomes the most expensive Grand Prix car ever.
The previous record was held from 1954 by another former-Fangio Mercedes W196 which went to Goodwood in 2013 for £ 19.6m after commissioning and taxes.
W196 R was an estimated price of more than € 50 m with the final hammer at € 46.5m in existence. The premium of a buyer is included in the final price.
This makes the second most valuable car to change hand in the auction, behind the 1955 Mercedes 300sLR UHLENHAT COP Sportscar, which was sold for € 135m (£ 113m) in May 2022.
“This is a beautiful car, it is a very historical car, it’s a little bit out of our scope window,” said IMS Curator Jason Vansical.
