Al-Quds Today journalists were covering events at Al-Awda Hospital when their vehicle was attacked.

Five journalists have been killed in an Israeli strike around a hospital in central Gaza, according to Palestinian officials and media reports.

Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif reported on Thursday morning that journalists from the al-Quds Today channel were covering events near al-Awda hospital, located in the Nusseirat refugee camp, when their broadcast van was hit by an Israeli airstrike.

Footage from the scene circulated on social media showed a vehicle engulfed in flames.

Screenshots taken from the video of a white van show the word “PRESS” in large red letters on the back of the vehicle.

The names of the deceased journalists are Fadi Hassouna, Ibrahim al-Sheikh Ali, Mohammed al-Ladah, Faisal Abu al-Kumsan and Ayman al-Zadi.

Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif said Ayman al-Zadi was waiting for his wife in front of the hospital while she was in labor giving birth to their first child.

Quds News Network said civil defense teams recovered the bodies of the victims and extinguished the fire at the scene.

There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the killing of four Palestinian journalists by Israel within a week earlier this month and called on the international community to hold the country accountable for attacks against the media.

At least 141 journalists have been killed in Israel’s war in Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to CPJ.
