Explosion in house, two people admitted to hospital
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said that two people have been taken to hospital after an explosion at a terrace house in north-east London.
Footage on social media showed a large explosion at the house in Ilford – which has been converted into flats – and pieces of masonry thrown onto the road.
The LFB dispatched eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters to tackle the blaze in Ley Street just after 16:00 GMT.
The brigade said the first floor and loft conversion were “completely burnt out” at the height of the fire. The extent of the injuries suffered by the two people who were taken to hospital has not been disclosed.
Station Commander Darren McTernan, who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters worked hard to get this blaze under control. Crews will remain at the scene until the evening.”
“Lea Street is closed between Eastern Avenue and Vicarage Road, affecting traffic in the surrounding area, so please continue to avoid the area if you can.”
