Dozens killed in fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria

A tanker exploded in Nigeria after it crashed, killing 77 people as they went to collect fuel at the scene, officials say.
On Saturday, the tanker overturned in Suleja area of north central Niger state and all its contents were scattered.
As people began draining the fuel, it exploded, killing dozens and injuring 25 others, including rescue workers, officials said.
Fuel tanker explosions and accidents are common in the country – often caused by poor road conditions and poorly maintained vehicles.
The emergency management agency said people injured in Saturday’s blast were being treated at nearby hospitals.
Nigeria has seen several similar incidents in recent months.
Two weeks earlier, a crashed fuel tanker exploded in oil-rich Delta state, killing at least five people, and at least 153 people Died in an explosion while trying to collect leaked petrol in October.
Fuel prices have increased by more than 400% in the past 18 months following Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s bold economic policies, including the removal of long-standing fuel subsidies.
The changes have pushed millions into poverty, and many have been forced to take desperate measures to survive.
The government has said that its policies are aimed at strengthening the economy.
