Dennis Law: Man Utd pay emotional tribute to legend ahead of Brighton game
Ferguson paid his tribute to Law before the game, crediting the forward with helping rebuild United after the 1958 Munich air disaster.
Law joined up with Torino in Italy and was part of the United team that became the first England player to win the European Cup in 1968, although he missed the final – a 4–1 win over Benfica – due to injury.
He also won one FA Cup and two English league titles with United, as well as helping Scotland win the British Home Championship six times.
Ferguson told MUTV: “He was the best Scottish player of all time.
“United had George Best and Bobby Charlton, but they called him The King.
“When he joined us in 1963 he turned the club around. It was the greatest thing he ever could have done.
“The role he played at that time was very important for the renewal of the team. I think most people always remember that signing from Italy. It was the cornerstone of their future success.”
Law spent two spells with United’s rivals Manchester City and wore a black armband in Sunday’s subsequent game against Ipswich.
