Connwater Shopping Center is located in East Belfast

The Consawator Shopping Center in East Belfast is to be closed in two weeks, with direct fixed charge receiver.

The receiver stated that “viability was assessed” with them “unfortunately given notice to the remaining tenants” that the Center would close its doors on March 21.

BDO Ni’s Michael Jennings said, “In these next weeks, (we) will support tenants through this transition, while the options for the center for the center, assessing the potential future uses in Consawators and the option for the center,” said Michael Jenings of BDO Ni.

There are only 20 commercial tenants remaining in the center of 162,000 square feet with 52 units.

Retail Parks and Range and LIDL units are open and completely operational.

‘Evolving retail landscape’

A Center spokesman said that “the disadvantage of” developing retail scenario, anchor tenants and difficult market status has made it “rapidly challenging to maintain operation in a viable manner”.

“So, very regrettably and after much considering various options, we have now appointed BDO as fixed charge receiver for the center,” he said.

He expressed deep gratitude to our loyal customers, tenants and employees who have supported the Consawator Shopping Center throughout the years “.

“We understand that this news will be disappointing for many people, the Consawator Shopping Center has been more than just one shopping destination; it has been a part of the East Belfast fabric.

“We regret it deeply to make this difficult decision.”

‘Hard time’

Democratic Unionist Party leader and East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson said it was a “tragic day” and his views “are with employees facing unemployment”.

“My thoughts are especially with people affected by uncertainty and job loss during this difficult time,” he said.

“While the center is in a decline in appearing for some time, it is important that the site remains profitable for people from Neutounds Road and surrounding areas.”

Robinson stated that he will “connect with the owners on the steps ahead” and, with his party’s colleagues, “In any way we will be available to help in any way affect in any way”.
