China hangs driver who killed dozens in car attack

A man who killed dozens of people by ramming his car into people exercising outside a stadium in southern China has been hanged, state media reported.

Fan Weikiu, 62, drove his car onto a practice track in Zhuhai on November 11, killing at least 35 people and wounding dozens more, in what is considered the deadliest attack on Chinese soil in a decade.

The court heard the uproar was caused by Fan’s “dissatisfaction” over how her property was divided following the divorce.

He was hanged on Monday, less than a month after the court awarded him death sentence.

Fan was found guilty of “endangering public safety”, with the court describing his motive as “extremely despicable” and the “methods” used as “particularly cruel”.

The attack was one of 19 attacks targeting strangers to occur across China in 2024, including two within a week of the Zhuhai attack.
