Britain’s faces pay more in the Chagos deal, Mauritius PM suggests
The Prime Minister of the African Island nation has suggested that Britain has paid more to Mauritius under a rebuilt deal on the future of Chagos Island.
Last October, the UK announced that it would hand over the sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius, but would maintain a 99-year lease on the UK-US military airbase on Diego Garcia’s largest island.
However, shortly after the deal, Mauritius chose a new Prime Minister Naveen Ramgulam, who wanted to reopen the conversation.
He told his MPs that on Tuesday, his government has negotiated on new terms, which means that the payment of UK lease will be linked to inflation and waved in front.
Downing Street has refused to comment on its comment.
