Bangladesh told India that it wants former Prime Minister Hasina back for ‘judicial process’. Sheikh Hasina News
Dhaka has sent a formal request to New Delhi for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in August amid protests that ended her 15-year rule.
Bangladesh has told India it wants to bring back to the country for “judicial process” former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to New Delhi in August, the acting head of the country’s foreign ministry says.
“We have sent a verbal note to the Indian government saying that the Bangladesh government wants her (Hasina) back here for the judicial process,” Tauhid Hussain told reporters on Monday, referring to diplomatic correspondence between the two countries. “
Hussain did not elaborate on the judicial process.
“We confirm that we have received a note verbale from the Bangladesh High Commission today regarding the extradition request. At this time, we have no comment to give on this matter,” said the official spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Relations between the South Asian neighbors who have strong trade and cultural ties have deteriorated since Hasina was ousted following violent protests against her rule and she took refuge across the border.
The head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has demanded that India repatriate Hasina so that Bangladesh can prosecute her for crimes against protesters and their opponents, and for crimes committed against her during her tenure in the past. Can be accused of crimes. 15 years.
Yunus is also angry with Hasina for criticizing his administration from New Delhi.
Dhaka made the request to New Delhi two weeks after India’s Foreign Secretary visited Bangladesh and both countries said they hoped to improve relations.
Hasina faces several charges, including crimes against humanity, genocide and murder, all of which she denies.
Dozens of Hasina’s allies have been detained since the fall of her regime in August, accused of involvement in a police crackdown that left more than 750 people dead during unrest sparked by her ouster. Most of whom were youth.
Hasina has also demanded an investigation into the killings and said that people other than security agencies may also be involved in many of the deaths.
The Dhaka-based International Criminal Tribunal has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and her close associates and the government has sought help from international police organization Interpol to arrest them.
Separately, Bangladesh on Monday launched an investigation into alleged embezzlement of $5 billion by Hasina and her family linked to the Rooppur nuclear power plant – a Russia-backed nuclear power plant – the country’s anti-corruption commission said.
“Claims of bribery, mismanagement, money laundering and potential abuse of power raise significant concerns about the integrity of the project and the use of public funds,” the commission said.
