BAFTA to announce nominations in surprise awards race
The BAFTA nominations will be announced on Wednesday, the latest milestone in an unpredictable awards season that has produced many surprises.
The British Academy’s shortlist is likely to be a strong Oscar indicator. Last year, the winners of the top six categories matched exactly between the two ceremonies.
Enrollment Follow last week’s Golden Globe AwardsSpanish-language musical Emilia Pérez won the most awards, and Demi Moore boosted her chances in the best actress race for body horror The Substance.
The BAFTA Film Awards, hosted by David Tennant, will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 16 February.
There is currently no consensus on who will ultimately win best picture at this year’s Oscars on March 2 in Los Angeles.
The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez, Anora, Conclave and Wicked have been nominated by different pundits for the top prize. These five currently have a possible path to victory.
The BAFTA shortlists come a week after the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations, In which Wicked’s strong performance was seen And a surprise nod to Pamela Anderson for her role as an aging Las Vegas stripper in The Last Showgirl.

potential surprise
The BAFTAs have six nomination slots available in each acting category, one more than the Oscars, meaning there’s extra room for some fun surprises.
Strong Bafta prospects among best actress frontrunners semi-swamp (The Substance) for his role as a TV aerobics instructor whose relevance is fading, and carla sofia gascon (Emilia Perez) to play a newly converted woman who used to be a drug dealer.
There are other death certificates Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) for her role as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and mickey madison (Anora), to play a New York stripper who falls in love with the son of a rich Russian.
But there is still a possibility of nomination for those on the long list Marianne Jean-Baptiste (harsh truth), for her performance as an angsty woman struggling with depression, and Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun) to play a young alcoholic who returns to Scotland.
Kate Winslet (Lee) The role of journalist Lee Miller can also make a place in this category. amy adams (nightbitch) and nicole kidman (Baby girl). a nomination for Marisa Abella, For the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black, there will be a special surprise.

British pioneers include Daniel Craig (Queer), who plays a gay man who ventures into the woods in search of a plant with telepathic properties, and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), a Cardinal who oversees the race to elect a new Pope.
But don’t bet on it being behind one or two outsiders like BAFTA Hugh Grant (heretics), Dev Patel (Monkey Man), kingsley ben adir (Bob Marley: One Love) and Jude Law (Firebrand). All are British, and if any of them were going to make a surprise nomination, Bafta would be the place where it would happen.
Meanwhile, leaders in supporting categories are likely to feature such as zoe saldana (Emilia Perez), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Kieran Culkin (a real pain) and Yura Borisov (Anora).
But the supporting actor race is particularly focused on whether denzel washington (Gladiator II) will be nominated. Despite a decades-long career and nine Oscar nods for acting (including two wins), Washington has never been nominated for a BAFTA.
voting change
A few years ago, BAFTA changed the voting system in some of its major categories in an effort to increase diversity.
came after this No ethnic minority actors were nominated in 2020, Margot Robbie, a white actress, was also nominated twice for two different films.
The jury system introduced the following year meant that members’ votes determined only two of the six slots in the acting categories, while the jury decided the other four.
The resulting 2021 shortlists were certainly more diverse, but they were also wildly out of line with the rest of awards season (though the eventual winners roughly matched the Oscars).
BAFTA continued to use the jury system in the following years, although the number of places determined by the jury was reduced to three.
However, things have changed this year.
Although the jury helped compile this year’s longlist, the final nominations for most major categories such as acting awards are now determined entirely by BAFTA members.
As a result, nominations are more likely to be similar to other ceremonies, with fewer outliers shortlisted than in recent years.
The BAFTA nominations will be announced by Mia McKenna Bruce and Will Sharp from BAFTA’s headquarters in central London at 12:00 GMT.
