Australia vs India: Mitchell Starc’s 6-48 and Nathan McSweeney’s 38 not out have given the hosts the upper hand on the first day of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval.

Mitchell Starc claimed career-best Test figures of 6-48 as Australia took the lead on the first day of the second Test against India.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to use the pitch first at the Adelaide Oval, but India were all out for 180 thanks to some quality bowling from Starc.

This left-arm fast bowler laid the foundation of Australia’s impressive attack by LBWing Yashasvi Jaiswal on the very first ball of the match.

Starc’s haul also included top-order wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, before another dangerous spell in the latter half of India’s innings blew away his lower order.

His figures eclipsed the 6-50 he took against Sri Lanka in Galle in August 2016 and underlined his mastery of the pink ball – no one has more than his 72 wickets in day-night Tests.

Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored for India with 42 runs in 54 balls with the help of three sixes, which also included a brilliant reverse scoop from Scott Boland.

Australia faced a testing session under lights with Jasprit Bumrah craving wickets on his 31st birthday.

The Indian fast bowler was looking towards the sky when Nathan McSweeney dismissed him in the slips to Rohit for five, but did not get a chance to get on the field.

After this, Bumrah dismissed fellow opener Usman Khawaja with a powerful ball which hit his ribs and hit the edge and Rohit took an easy catch.

However, McSweeney and the under-pressure Marnus Labuschagne battled diligently to stumps without further loss, and would resume on 38 and 20.

The pair’s concentration was not broken even by two brief floodlight failures and a spectator stirring a beer snake next to the sightscreen.
