The American Airlines, whose subsidiary operated the flight, stated that “the aircraft had 60 passengers and four crew members”.
A US Army official said that the helicopter involved was a black hawk model carrying three soldiers. He was on a “training flight”, a separate military spokesperson said in a statement.
The Washington police said “there is no confirmation on the number of casualties at this time.”
The Federal Aviation Administration ordered grounding of all aircraft in Reagan National, and Washington’s police said on X that “many agencies” were responding to the accident site in Potomac.
The last major deadly American accident was in 2009, when the Continental Flight 3407 from New Jersey to Buffalo, New York, rode all 49 people.
