Wimbledon champion Max Purcell temporarily suspended after anti-doping violation
Two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell has been provisionally suspended after admitting an anti-doping rule violation.
The 26-year-old player has received a voluntary suspension after admitting to breaking International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) anti-doping rules relating to the “use of a prohibited method”.
The Australian, who won the 2022 Wimbledon doubles championship with Matthew Ebden, has now been temporarily banned from playing, coaching or participating in any tennis events.
ITIA did not elaborate on the duration of Purcell’s ban but it was effective till December 12, 2024.
“The time served under provisional suspension will be credited against any future sanction,” ITIA said.
The provisional suspension could rule Purcell out of the Australian Open in Melbourne, which starts on January 12.
Tennis Australia says the ITIA has confirmed the breach related to a prohibited method “rather than the presence of a prohibited substance”.
