Warren Gatland: Wales coach to remain for 2025 Six Nations

Following autumn defeats against Fiji, Australia and South Africa, the WRU announced it would review performances under Tierney.

Tierney presented the findings of the review at a WRU board meeting this week.

While Gatland remains in post, the New Zealander has been warned that performances will be further reviewed after the tournament.

Tierney said, “I have had many honest conversations with Warren and I will not hide the fact that his position was on the line when we were conducting our review.”

“Furthermore, like any head coach in any sport, he knows that the security of his position is directly related to the team’s performance and this is a position that will continue to grow.

“There is a tough challenge ahead but Warren is ready for that challenge. We also believe he is equal to it.”

Tierney says the WRU board considered more widespread immediate changes but concluded that challenging Gatland was the best way to change Wales’ fortunes on the pitch.

“We have evaluated in detail the planning and preparation, enabling and controllable factors that are the responsibility of the coaches as well as the culture in the camp, the mental toughness of the players, their experiences so far and their own heartfelt views on the direction of the squad. Travel for,” Tierney said.

“We have incorporated expertise and opinion from a number of reputable and knowledgeable sources and we have seen what many pundits and fans have expressed, that we are not performing to our potential at this time.”
