What are the chances of a white Christmas?
As we get closer to the big day, you may be dreaming of a white Christmas, but what are the chances of actually seeing one in the UK this year?
Long-range weather forecast models are beginning to agree on potential themes for seasonal forecasting. And it’s starting to look like it’s going to be turbulent for much of the country.
At this stage, a White Christmas is most likely in parts of Scotland, but it is still too early to know for sure.
In general, the weather is expected to remain variable, wet if not stormy and quite windy. However, cooler temperatures are likely to prevail as winds become more north-westerly, with the potential for some sleet or snow, especially over the hills of Scotland.
Climatically, the probability of a White Christmas varies greatly across the country, generally becoming more likely the further north you go and the higher you go above sea level.
So the places that see the most “White Christmas Days” are northern and eastern Scotland, northern England, northern Wales and the north-west Midlands.
