Indian Americans are concerned about American relations under Trump, the survey shows

Indians are rapidly optimistic about the future of American India, but have deep concerns about US-India relations under another Donald Trump administration, get a new survey.
The 2024 Indian-American Survey, Carnegie was conducted in October by Endowment for International Peace and YouGov, investigated the Indian-American political approach.
Two important elections were held in India and the US last year, between one intensity – but sometimes stressful – partnership. Tension between countries flared up on one American federal prosecution of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani And Allegations of conspiracy to murder a Delhi -backed murder on US soil.
With over five million Indian original inhabitants in the US, the survey asked some major questions: How do Indian US President who watched Biden’s US-India relations to handle? Do they see Donald Trump as a better option? And how do they assess after India’s trajectory after the 2024 election?
Here are some of the major takeaairs from the report, which was based on the national level representative online survey of 1,206 Indian-American adult residents.

Trump V Biden on India
Indian Americans evaluated the handling of the Biden administration to the US-India relations compared to Trump’s first term.
A fictional Kamla Harris administration was better seen for bilateral relations than the word second Trump during voting.
Obtained polarization plays an important role: 66% Indian-American Republican believes that Trump was better for US-India relations, while only 8% of Democrats agreed.
In contrast, 15% of the 15% Republican are in favor of Indian-American Democrats Biden.
Since most Indians are American Democrats, it gives Biden a overall lead.
During his February meeting at the White House, both Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised each other’s leadership, but Trump Criticized India’s high trade tariffs, call them a “big problem”.
‘Murder-for-Hare’ controversy
The alleged Indian conspiracy to kill a separatist on American soil is not widely registered – only half the respondents are aware of it.
In October, the US accused a former Indian intelligence officer of allegedly conspiring to kill and murder with money laundering. Gurpant Singh PanunA US-based lawyer for an independent Sikh state, Khalistan.
This is the first time the Government of India has been implicated directly in an attempt to murder. India has said that it is cooperating with American investigation. In January, a panel established by India to investigate Washington’s allegations recommended Legal action against an unnamed person is considered a pre -intelligence agent.
A narrow majority of respondents stated that India would not be justified in taking such action and if the posts are reversed, then catch the same feelings about America “.
Israel and Palestinians
Indian Americans are divided with biased party lines, Democrats have expressed more and more sympathy for Palestinians and Republicans who are supporters of Israel.
Four of the 10 respondents believe that Biden has also been supporters of Israel in the ongoing struggle.
In October 2023, about 1,200 people were killed in the attack by Hamas fighters of Gaza, most of the citizens, inside Israel and 251 people hostage. Most ceasefire are issued in agreements or other arrangements.
According to the Hamas-Interested Health Ministry, the military aggressive of Israel killed more than 48,000 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children.
The conversation to prolong the delicate ceasefire, whose first phase ended on March 1, is expected to resume in Qatar on Monday.
Bright India’s approach
Thirty -seven percent of Indian Americans believe that India is going in the right direction, there has been an increase of 10 percent from four years ago.
The same part approves Modi’s performance as Prime Minister. Additionally, four of the 10 respondents feel that India’s 2024 elections – where Modi’s party did not get a majority – made the country more democratic.

The survey found that many Indians support the American Modi and believe that India is on the right path, yet half the American soils are unaware of the attempt to murder.
Does this indicate the difference in the tendency to ignore some tasks in favor of information access, selective engagement or comprehensive nationalist spirit?
The study co-writer Milan Vaishnav said, “It is difficult to tease the exact cause for this, but our understanding is that it is more with selective engagement.”
Data collected by Carnegie in 2020 suggests that about 60% of Indians regularly follow the Government of India and public affairs, leaving an important part, which is “attached only sporadic”.
“Often people create a broader mark based on news, social media and conjunctions of conversation with friends and family. Given the latest US news Holocaust, it is not surprising that the conspiracy of ‘rent for murder’ did not break for a large part of the community,” said Mr. Vaishnav.
Indian Americans, while are cautious about Trump and generally favor biden or harris for the US-India relations, continue to support Modi back in India. Given Modi’s nationalist policies, what do you eat for this deviation? Is this more operated than personal effects than ideology?

“This is a case where you sit, where you are standing,” said Mr. Vaishnav.
“We have deepened this question in depth and found that Indians generally have more liberal views on American policy issues than in India,” he said in related research.
For example, while Muslims maintain a more liberal attitude in both Indian-American-India and America, Hindu Indian-American express liberal views in America (where they are minority) but more conservative stance in India, where they belong to a majority.
“In other words, a person’s majority or minority position plays an important role in shaping his political views,” said Mr. Vaishnav.
If Indian Americans saw Trump as a threat to bilateral relations, why did they hug him during his first term, as seen in events ‘Howdy Modi!’Has Trump’s his opinion changed due to his policies, or is it more about changing political streams?
“We should not be normal than an incident or a segment of the Indian American population. More than 50,000 Indian Americans ‘Hoddy, Modi!’ The first and foremost to see Modi recalls Trump that Trump was added to a later date, ”said Mr. Vaishnav.
“Second, it is a diverse migrant with a range of political ideas. While Indian American Democratic party bends highly, a very large minority – we estimate about 30% in 2024 – supports Republicans under Trump.”
The Indian American is committed to the Democratic Party, but the attachment is reduced. Some 47% identify as Democrats, below 56% in 2020, a survey found last year.
Do Indian Americans have a fine understanding of political development in both countries, or are their views more influenced by migrant stories and media echoed chambers?
Mr. Vaishnav said that 2020 data shows that online news was the primary source of information about India, followed by television, social media and word of mouth. Within social media, YouTube, Facebook and Whatsapp were the most common platforms.
“Direct engagement with India is more limited, with Indian Americans of foreign origin more commonly involved than people born in the US.
“Saying that, no one should ignore the fact that the bonds of cultural connectivity are quite strong, even with the second and third generation Indian Americans.”
Finally, the survey underlines a complex image of the Indian American community – a mixture of a selective engagement, transferring political winds and separating personal experiences.
