Sudan military plane crash in residential area

State media says at least 46 people have been killed and 10 others have been injured in Sudani military aircraft Omdurman after crashing in a residential neighborhood, which is the twin city of the capital Khartum.

The Antonov aircraft came down on Tuesday evening after the tech-off of the Army’s Sedna Air Base, killing military officers and citizens.

The cause of the accident is not clear, but military sources have been quoted saying that it was likely to be a technical fault.

The accident occurred a day after the paramilitary rapid support forces (RSF) – which is in war with the army – said it demolished a fighter jet in South Darfur.

The conflict has destroyed large parts of Sudan – including Khartum and Omdurman – thousands of people were killed and about 12 million displaced.

The Health Ministry said that emergency teams ran the injured citizens including children in a nearby hospital after Tuesday’s plane crash.

The commander of a senior army in Khartum was among those killed, the Reuters News Agency quoted unnamed military sources.

According to the AFP news agency report, the witnesses stated that a loud explosion occurred and many houses were damaged.

There was also a shortage of electricity in the nearby neighborhood due to the accident.

Sudan has been hit by a civil war since April 2023, when the Army and RSF joined a vicious power struggle.

The war has divided the country, the army has controlled the north and east, while RSF holds most of the Darfur region in the west and parts of the south.

In recent weeks, the army has withdrawn parts of Khartum and surrounding areas from RSF.
