Tesco to cut 400 jobs in shops and head office

Tesco has announced a plan to cut about 400 jobs as part of the plan to “simple” the business.

Supermarket giants said that the job will be affected at its bakers, mobile phone shops and its main office in Welvin Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Tesco reported that it is looking for “more efficient ways to work” due to the rapid competitive nature of the UK grocery industry.

The retailer said shake-up would see how it operates its bakery model in some shops and changes the management structure used in Tesco mobile stores.

Matthew Barns, CEO, said: “These are difficult decisions affecting our colleagues, but we believe that they are necessary to make us capable of investing in the most cases for our customers.

“Our priority is to support affected colleagues and we will do everything to help find alternative roles within our business. Today, we have about 1,000 vacancies available.”

Separately, Tesco said it would soon start a consultation to close its snowland distribution center at Kent.

It said that this is a plan to open a new warehouse site in Ilsford, about three miles away, all affected workers in Snowland are being offered roles on the new site.

Earlier this month, Tesco owners celebrated the “biggest Christmas” of the retailer as it extended its share of the UK grocery market to its highest level since 2016.

It reported the sale of the sale of the UK and Ireland, except for fuel and VAT, 3.7% from six weeks to 4 January and in the week before Christmas.

Tesco cut comes a week after a rival Sainsbury said it will cut 3,000 jobs As it closes its remaining cafes and closes its patnary and pizza counters.
