Elizabeth Line staff member dies after attack
A 61-year-old Elizabeth Line worker has died after being attacked at a railway station in east London.
The British Transport Police (BTP) were called to Ilford station at approximately 20:50 GMT on 4 December to reports of a serious assault.
The man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries and later died.
Ayodele Jamgbadi, 28, of Kingston Road, Ilford, was charged with grievous bodily harm, assault and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon on a private place.
The BTP said its detectives will apply to amend the charge to reflect the victim’s death.
The RMT union said the victim, who was one of their members, was a customer experience assistant for MTrail, which runs the Elizabeth Line.
General secretary Mick Lynch said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our member who died in an attack while at work.
“The entire union extends our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time and the thoughts of everyone at RMT are with him.
“We will keep a close eye on the legal proceedings and comment further at the appropriate time.”
‘isolated incident’
Mr Jamgbadi appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on 6 December and was remanded in custody.
He is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on Saturday.
DCI Paul Attwell said specialist family liaison officers were supporting the victim’s family.
“Our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time,” he said.
“I would like to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident. We are not looking for anyone else.”
