91-year-old man rejected retirement to work in chip shop

BBC News, Northamptonshire

A 91-year-old man who still works at a fish and chip shop five days a week said he has continued in his role because he “doesn’t like” retiring.
John Panayis, from Northampton, has spent more than 60 years in the food industry and works six to seven hours a day at Nick Plaice Fish Bar in Kingsley, Northamptonshire.
He opened the shop in 2009 before handing the business over to his son five years ago and credits his youthful looks to keeping busy.
Mr Panayis said: “I’ve tried to retire, and I didn’t like it. I want to be with people and work keeps your mind active.”

Mr Panayis, who is originally from Cyprus, moved to Northampton in the 1950s and built a career running various food businesses in the area, including the town’s first French restaurant, a coffee shop and a nightclub.
Reflecting on his long career, the 91-year-old said he was grateful for the support of the local community.
“They have been very supportive of me and my family. I am very appreciative and grateful,” he said.
‘Alcohol and proper diet’
Stewart Wright, his son-in-law, who owns the Nuovo restaurant in Northampton, said Mr Panayis epitomized the hospitality industry and work ethic.
“He won’t stop, he loves to be busy, he doesn’t know any other way than hard work,” he said.
“It’s a way of life for him – a combination of hard work and customer service, he focuses on that rather than the business.”
When asked about the secret of his longevity, Mr. Panayis joked: “Probably a little wine and the right diet.”
