Adele foils ‘haunted’ £6million home-owner sale

BBC News, South East

Adele has been accused of blocking the sale of a £6million house she lived in by saying it was “haunted”.
The award-winning singer rented the Grade II-listed locked house in Partridge Green, West Sussex, in 2012.
The owner has submitted planning permission to convert the property from one dwelling to three residential units and to convert the existing garage and flat into a detached cottage.
In the submission, the owner said comments made by Adele during an interview about the 10-bedroom house being haunted had hindered the sale process.
It says, “The first tenant, Adele, stayed for six months and ruined the property, saying it was haunted.”
“This comment negatively impacted future marketing efforts and continues to impact the property’s reputation today.”
‘The Creeps’
Discussing the locked house in an interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS, when she lived at the property, Adele said: “It’s all quite scary really.
“I’m not walking around here by myself. It makes me nervous.”
After the singer vacated the property, it was re-listed for sale, but no offers were received.
It was then rented out to a tenant who wanted to use the property to run an exclusive dressmaking business. The application stated, but it was later discovered that the tenant was running a residential retreat with 11 guest bedrooms and a fitness boot camp.
According to the application, the owner has actively tried to sell the property for nearly 14 years.
It said the only offer was received in August 2020, but the prospective buyer withdrew it after learning about the alleged haunted condition of the property.
The Lock House was originally constructed in about 1909 before a major reconstruction program in the 1940s.
In 1971, it was divided and sold at auction in 26 separate lots. But later it was purchased by the Church and became the Convent of the Visitation.
The current owner acquired the lock house in 2003 from a property dealer who had previously purchased it after the convent moved to Albourne.
According to its current listing, the Lock House and its 32-acre estate has 10 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a tennis court, a helicopter pad, and a cinema room.
It is available for sale for £5,995,000.
