Death toll from deadly floods, landslides in Indonesia rises to 21. weather news
Flooded rivers have flooded nine villages in Indonesia’s Central Java province and landslides have hit mountainous settlements following torrential rains.
Videos and photos released by the national search and rescue agency showed workers digging wildly in villages, where roads and green-terraced paddy fields had turned into dirty brown mud and villages were covered with thick mud, rocks and uprooted Were covered with trees.
National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said the floods triggered a landslide on Monday, which buried two houses and a cafe in the Petungkriono resort area.
The disasters destroyed 25 houses, a dam and three main bridges connecting villages in Pekalongan town. At least 21 people were killed, 13 were injured and about 300 were forced to flee to temporary government shelters.
Several rescue workers recovered three mud-covered bodies, including that of a five-month-old baby, during a search of the Petungkriono area, where two houses and a cafe were buried under tons of mud and rocks.
Another body was recovered from under the broken bridge near the river in Kasimpar village. Rescue workers are still searching for the five missing people.
Heavy seasonal rains from October to March often cause floods and landslides in Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile floodplains.
