Clubbers will be given lollies to keep them quiet

Lollipops will be handed out to nightclubs in Leeds in an effort to help keep people living in nearby blocks of flats quiet following noise complaints.

People will be given sweets as they leave Home and Carousel after the city center venue is allowed to remain open later.

At a council hearing on Tuesday, an application to add one hour to serving hours each day at the Albion Street premises was approved, with the club now open until 04:00 from Sunday to Thursday and 05:00 at weekends. Permission to sell liquor was given.

David Njerup, director of Home and Carousel operations, said giving out lollipops to clubbers has been effective at other nightclubs and bars.

The venue opened last year on the site of the former Tiger Tiger bar in the city and is split into different sections.

The Carousel is a bar offering arcade games, while the Home serves as a nightclub, although both are run together by the same operator.

according to Local Democracy Reporting ServiceLeeds City Council’s licensing sub-committee was told there is a trend in the city for venues to open later.

But councilors heard that people living in nearby K2 apartments have raised fears over noise and anti-social behaviour.

Tony Whitfield, on behalf of K2 tenants, said there had been problems in the past with previous names and operators of the venue.

“The sound really echoes through the building,” he said.

However, Mr Njerup said noise-limiting measures at the complex included relocating the outdoor smoking area and the use of acoustic paneling in the club area downstairs.

“There shouldn’t be any noise from that nightclub,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking about the idea of giving lollipops to clubbers at the venue, Mr Nejrup said: “It may sound strange, but people tend to calm down when they have something in their mouth.”
